Parable of the Talents

Passage: Matthew 25:14-30
Service Type:

Luke 19: 11-27 | Genesis 1:28 | Genesis 1:8

In this talk, we take a fresh look at this very familiar parable, firstly placing it in its context of Jesus being concerned that his followers did not realise his 2nd coming would not be immediate, and talking about the need for faithfulness and perseverance until he finally returns. Then we look at the characteristics of the unfaithful servant, namely that he didn’t know his master’s heart, he was described as lazy rather than cautious, that not having explicit instructions as to what to do is not an excuse for doing nothing, and that he didn’t understand he was born to be fruitful. The talk ends with an appeal to all of us to be fruitful and to recognise that being fruitful requires deliberate intent.
